Examination of possible mitigation measures in the river Lagarfljót.
The aim of this research project is to examine possible mitigation measures in the river Lagarfljót. Salmon broodstock is sampled in the watershed. Juvenile salmon are raised in a hatchery until smolting, when they are tagged and released back into release pond which will open into the river. Farmers with net fisheries in the river will look for tagged salmon, measure and photograph them. Fish biologists will examine area around release pond and look for possible fish there. The results are then analysed for return rates, life history and migration patterns.
At this stage this project is research and development only and will not generate income or any financial benefits. Necessary permits for the hatchery, release pond, collecting and handling broodstock, juveniles and returning salmon have all been granted to those working on the project.
